Eastenders: the Christmas Specials4:24 PM
Today I would love to share with you something about one of my favourites series:-)
From the Queen’s Speech to the Doctor Who special, it’s the ultimate Christmas Day treat to relax in front of the box after a hearty turkey dinner. There’s one BBC staple, however, that always goes for gold, reserving the biggest reveals, memorable moments and tearjerkers for its hotly awaited Christmas special.
Over the last three decades, Eastenders has seen the residents of Albert Square suffer more than their fair share of seasonal drama. The first ever Christmas special aired in 1986, almost two years after the first episode was broadcast. Dirty Den, Walford’s favourite bad guy, set the trend for Yuletide drama when he served divorce papers instead of Christmas dinner to lying wife Angie.
Big revelations are key to a juicy Christmas special. Show producers often let storylines simmer for months before allowing things to boil over in time for the Christmas pudding.
From affairs being exposed to lovers finally tying the knot, romance is often – but not always – at the heart of the year’s biggest episode. Dirty Den divorcing Angie racked up the show’s highest-ever ratings, remaining unbeaten to this day. It was also voted best Christmas episode of a soap ever, trumping offerings from Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Brookside.
Even if you haven’t been watching the show religiously throughout 2012, there’s still time to get in the know with goings-on in Albert Square before the much-anticipated Christmas episode airs. Now is the time to tune in and get to grips with who’s who and what’s what in time for the big day.
The show’s wardrobe department keeps a keen eye on current trends, so you might even pick up some ideas for what to wear to this year’s Christmas party – though anyone tempted to buy pencil dresses this season should probably avoid taking cues from Kat Slater!
Whether it will be a charming tearjerker, like the year Alfie and Kat finally tied the knot, or a drama-fuelled reveal like the year Max and Stacey’s affair was finally exposed to Bradley, it’s guaranteed to be unmissable viewing. This year, fans have been speculating over the likelihood of the Brannings snagging the pivotal family role once again for the special episode, but only time will tell…
