Everyone’s wearing Tartan - brief history....

From a long time fashion has an enduring love affair with the pattern of interlocking stripes called a tartan. This classic print from Highlands is here again.

The earliest known tartan in Scotland can be dated to the third or fourth century AD. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now we can find them in many other materials. There are certain colors or pattern motifs that are more common, but there is no regulation about tartan system.

It was specially popular in Scottish Highland culture and became characteristic of this area dress. In XVIII century it was even forbidden to wear in a an attempt to suppress the rebellious Scottish culture. As the effect when the law was repealed in 1782, it was no longer ordinary Highland dress, but was adopted instead as the symbolic national dress of Scotland

In fashion tartan started appeared in association with british aristocracy showing its preppy face. But it started be really popular in 70s with the emergence of punk fashion, as symbol of british discontent with the ruling class. Tartan started to appear in Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen designs, in different ways, but they made it popular. Than in 90's arrived Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz and we all wanted to looked like her. Today her looks are once again in.

Nowadays there are about 7000 tartan designs, enough to satisfy all of the tastes:-) Tartan trend was transformed and enlightened, we can see the perfect combination of its preppy and punk side. Last seasons brought us layering, awkwardness and androgyny. It’s started to be a part not only of winter collection, but also moved to spring summer designs.

Lately we could see some tartan looks from top-to-toe at Lanvin, Emilia Wickstead, Dolce & Gabbana and Tommy Hilfiger. As well as subtler combination with one or two tartan elements at Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, among the others.

Here I leave you with some inspirations from 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and last few years, you can see how tartan appeared at fashion world and decided to stay there.

Soon some street style and my proposal how to wear it....
